Team![]() About THW KielThe club: THW Kiel hold all handball records in Germany: German champions 15 times, five consecutive titles (2005-2009), German Cup winners six times and German Super Cup winners five times. International success: In 2007 Kiel won the EHF Champions League trophy. This success against Flensburg in the Final was their greatest international recognition so far. Kiel reached the CL finals three more times, but lost against Spanish rivals: against Barcelona in 2000 and against Ciudad Real in 2008 and 2009. Kiel are the only team to reach all of the last four CL semi finals. The Germans were also successful in the EHF Cup by winning it three times. The current season: Before the start of the season Kiel had to cope with the loss of three key players: Stefan Lövgren (finished his career), Nikola Karabatic and Vid Kavticnik (went to Montpellier). THW engaged signed other world class players such as Momir Illic and Daniel Narcisse. With those changes in Kiel, the team has not been as dominant in Germany as before: they missed the German Cup finals and they found a big rival at home, HSV Hamburg. The way to the EHF FINAL4: In the group phase Kiel won in Barcelona, but lost the return game at home. Nevertheless, they won their group due to a better direct result against Barcelona. In the Last 16, Kiel won both matches against FCK Copenhagen and they continued in the Quarterfinals with two more narrow victories against Rhein Neckar Löwen. The coach: Alfred Gislasson had large shoes to fill as he succeeded Noka Serdarusic on the bench. But by going his own ways, with his own coaching and training style, the Icelandic became just as successful as Serdarusic.
