„A supernatural day“Kiel players celebrate their CL title
Dominik Klein carried the new CL trophy on his shoulder and was signing “We are the champions”, when he entered the Press area. “It’s incredible, it’s supernatural, it’s a day I’ll always remember in my whole life. I’ve never experienced a match like this,” the German international said after THW Kiel had won the CL title for the second time after 2007. “We are such a great team, nobody would have bet a Cent on us after 40 minutes, but we fought until the end,” Klein said. For him it was a very special match – as he never lost a match in the LANXESS Arena, neither with Kiel, nor with the national team, with which he became world champion in Cologne 2007. “We’re all so lucky. I still can’t imagine what has happened. It was a real home match thanks to our fans.” Daniel Narcisse who plays his first season for Kiel, was impressed, too: “It’s such a happy day. I’m glad to be among this team. Nobody expected us to win the Champions League after Nikola Karabatic and Stefan Lövgren left the team before this season. Now we’re on top of the world. Great!” Narcisse specially mentioned players like Anic, Lund and Gentzel, which had a great impact on winning the final against Barcelona: “We’re a team, not a couple of stars – and we have a great fighting spirit,” the Frenchmen said. For line player Marcus Ahlm the key factor for winning was the team spirit, too: “We compensated the injured players like Andersson and Illic by others. We showed a great moral until the very end – and Thierry Omeyer again was the most important player.” For Ahlm the work of more than one year accumulated in this day in Cologne: “We worked so hard only for this final. At the start of the season we had to grow to be a team, and during the finals it seemed to end very bad. But we always stood up – now we deserve this new trophy.” The THW players will have big celebrations in Cologne – but only for one night, as Ahlm mentions: “We still have two important Bundesliga matches on Wednesday and Saturday – we need to win them as we want to become German champion.” “This team is outstanding,” said Momir Illic, who only had one contact to the ball in the final – but scored with a penalty. “I went there and knew that I had to hit the back of the net – and it worked! To win the Champions League is the greatest thing you can experience as a player.” Text: Björn Pazen |
