City of Cologne: Sport![]() Cologne is a major sporting metropolis with a public traditionally enthusiastic about sport. This is hardly surprising, since almost every discipline is at home in the sporting city of Cologne. At the beginning of Cologne’s sporting era, it was above all cycling and boxing that inspired the masses. Now, professional sport casts a spell over the citizens of Cologne week in, week out with a sporting mix of football, handball and ice hockey. The LANXESS arena as the largest multifunctional hall in Germany and the highly modern RheinEnergieStadion and are the sports temples of the citizens of Cologne. The Citizens of Cologne are not only an enthusiastic public, they are also athletically active. Two million square metres of open air and 25,000 square metres of indoor sporting areas offer an ample opportunity for this. Cologne is also fit, however, in sports training. The Deutsche Sporthochschule (German Sport University Cologne) offers its some 7,000 students differentiated training in all fields of work related to sport and is a leader in the sector of scientific and medical research in the sporting field. Furthermore, it is also well known for its internationally famous trainer instruction (e.g. the German football association football trainer apprenticeship). In the Rheinauhafen, sports fans can experience highlights of sports history in the Deutsches Sport & Olympia Museum. |
